No impact from recent announcement over 2009 Elance hacking (International Business Times)

February 13, 2017

The International Business Times reports that a hacker recently leaked 1.3 million accounts hacked back in 2009 from online staffing platform Elance onto an underground hacking forum. The newspaper's report included a statement from Upwork saying the affected accounts no longer exist and there is no impact on current customers.

The actual hacking had been reported by the company when it occurred in 2009, and was covered in publications including TechCrunch. According to additional information provided to the Staffing Industry Daily News by Upwork, Elance responded at the time by notifying users of the incident via email, requiring users to reset passwords, remediating the cause of the incident and working with appropriate authorities. As the Elance site has closed, the impacted accounts no longer exist, and the company stressed there is no current impact on customers.
