More than two in five gained weight at current jobs, survey finds

More than two in five, 44%, of US workers have gained weight at their current job, according to a survey released today by CareerBuilder. Twenty-five percent reported gaining more than 10 pounds, while 17% of workers reported they lost weight.

When asked what they felt contributed to their weight gain at their current job, 53% said “sitting at the desk most of the day,” 45% said they are “too tired from work to exercise,” and 36% of workers blamed “eating because of stress.”

Workers in certain industries and occupations were more likely to have gained weight at their present job:

  • Transportation: 49%
  • Healthcare: 48%
  • Financial services: 46%
  • Sales: 46%
  • Retail: 40%
  • Manufacturing: 39%
  • IT: 38%

According to the survey, 49% of people in management roles have gained weight in their current job, compared to 43% of people in non-management roles. The study also found women were more likely than men to report gaining weight at their present jobs, at 49% and 39% respectively.

The CareerBuilder survey was conducted by Harris Interactive and included 3,031 US workers. It was conducted between Feb. 10 and March 17, 2016.
