Mississippi posts highest jobless rate among states in January

Mississippi posted the highest annual average unemployment rates among all states in January at 6.7%, according to data released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Alaska and New Mexico followed at 6.6% and 6.5% respectively.

The District of Columbia had a rate of 6.5%.

North Dakota and South Dakota posted the lowest unemployment rate in January at 2.8% each, closely followed by New Hampshire at 2.9%.

Twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia had unemployment rate decreases from December, eight states had increases, and 14 states had no change.

The national jobless rate, 4.9%, was little changed from December and was 0.8 percentage point lower than in January 2015.
