Manhattan employment agency Axion LLC could be financially responsible for the wrongful death of celebrity real estate broker Linda Stein, who was murdered in 2007 by an assistant sent by the agency, the New York Daily News reports. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Lucy Billings ruled real estate brokerage Douglas Elliman should not be liable for Stein’s fatal beating by Natavia Lowery because it was technically not her employer, even though it paid for Lowery’s services as a perk to Stein. The judge said Lowery was controlled by Axion, which recommended Lowery to Douglas Elliman.
