Lyft, Handy execs named to inaugural Digital Economy Board of Advisors

April 07, 2016

US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker appointed two human cloud company executives to the US Commerce Department’s new Digital Economy Board of Advisors: Lyft co-founder and President John Zimmer and Handy co-founder and CEO Oisin Hanrahan.

The Board of Advisors — which includes 17 private-sector leaders with a wide range of expertise on digital policy and economic issues — will provide private-sector input and support for the Department’s Digital Economy Agenda, which promotes innovation, a free and open Internet, trust online, and Internet access.

“The innovative ideas that have emerged in the digital economy have transformed the way consumers obtain the products and services they need, while simultaneously creating new economic opportunities for workers everywhere,” a Handy blog post quoted Hanrahan as saying. “I am honored to join this talented group to help ensure that good ideas continue to grow into great companies that contribute meaningfully to our economy.”

Zoë Baird, CEO and president of the Markle Foundation, and Mitchell Baker, executive chairwoman of Mozilla, will serve as co-chairs of the board. Appointees, who will serve two-year terms, were chosen from a pool of applicants from industry, civil society and academia to provide expertise from a variety of viewpoints.

“I am thrilled that such a knowledgeable and diverse group of thought leaders has volunteered to serve on our new Digital Economy Board of Advisors,” said Secretary Pritzker. “As we develop an agenda to help the digital economy grow and thrive, it is critical that we engage with those on the front lines of the digital revolution.”
