AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AHS) ranks as the largest healthcare staffing firm in the US in terms of healthcare temporary staffing revenue, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2016 report on the largest healthcare staffing firms. CHG Healthcare ranked second, followed by Cross Country Healthcare Inc. (NASD: CCRN).

AMN’s revenue includes revenue from Onward Healthcare, which it acquired in the first quarter of 2015; Cross Country’s results include revenue from Mediscan, acquired in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Thirty-six staffing firms each generated at least $50 million in healthcare temporary staffing revenue in 2015. Combined, they generated $8.2 billion in such revenue and comprised 62% of the market.

“This year’s report highlights the boom in healthcare staffing that has occurred recently,” Research Manager Timothy Landhuis said. “We estimate that in 2015, there was a record number of 20 companies that generated $100 million or more in healthcare temporary staffing revenue. Similarly, we note that in the travel nurse subsegment, there was a record number of nine companies that generated $100 million or more in travel nurse revenue.”

The five largest healthcare staffing firms in the US and their estimated 2015 staffing revenue are:

1. AMN Healthcare Services: $1.4 billion, 11% market share
2. CHG Healthcare Services: $1.1 billion, 8% market share
3. Cross Country Healthcare: $759 million, 6% market share
4. Jackson Healthcare: $665 million, 5% market share
5. Maxim Healthcare Services: $339 million, 3% market share

The report also provides four rankings of the largest firms in each healthcare sub-segment: travel nurse, per diem nurse, locum tenens and allied healthcare.

By sub-segment, AMN Healthcare also ranked as the largest travel nurse firm with 21% market share and as the largest allied healthcare staffing firm with 6% market share.

CHG Healthcare Services ranked as the largest locum tenens firm in the US with 29% market share in locum tenens revenue.

Maxim Healthcare Services ranked as the largest per diem nursing firm with 8% market share.
