Industry pioneer, Volt co-founder Jerry Shaw passes away

May 16, 2018

Jerome (Jerry) Shaw, co-founder and executive VP emeritus at Volt Information Sciences Inc. (NYSE MKT: VISI), passed away on May 3.

Shaw and his older brother, William (Bill) Shaw, launched Volt in 1950 with just $13. The New York-based IT and engineering staffing and MSP provider now employs 20,000 people and ranks as the 16th-largest US staffing firm.

“Having grown up as the son of immigrant parents in New York City during the Great Depression, Jerry often shared the impact his humble beginnings had on his life’s work at Volt,” Volt President and CEO Michael Dean wrote in a letter to employees. “Jerry was tough, smart and tenacious in business, absolutely committed to the success of Volt — yet he was unfailingly warm, caring and loyal to his friends, colleagues and employees.”

Shaw was named to the American Staffing Association’s Leadership Hall of Fame in 2010. A World War II veteran, he represented Volt as a corporate co-founder of the nonprofit Hire America’s Heroes and launched the Volt Military Heroes Program. He also supported students from diverse backgrounds in completing their education and pursuing careers as entrepreneurs and leaders with scholarship endowments at the University of California San Diego and his alma mater, New Mexico State University.

A memorial service will be held in June in San Diego.
