Independent contractor ballot measure most expensive in California’s history (Ballotpedia)

September 09, 2020

Proposition 22, which aims to allow human cloud firms such as Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and Lyft Inc. (NASDAQ: LYFT) to continue to classify their drivers as independent contractors, has become the most expensive ballot measure to appear in California, Ballotpedia reports. The effort to back the proposition has taken in $181.4 million from five gig economy companies: Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, InstaCart and Postmates. The campaign for Proposition 22 collected signatures to place it before California voters on the Nov. 3 ballot. Its aim is to counteract California’s AB 5 law that gets tough on independent contractor misclassification and could force the companies to treat their drivers as employees.
