In tech: Upwork launches ‘human layer’; Gigster raises $20 million, Michael Jordan is investor

September 01, 2017

In recent tech news, Upwork is launching a “human layer” with its new Talent Services division and Gigster adds Michael Jordan as an investor in a $20 million funding round. In addition, eHarmony sold its job-matching website; and Zūm, an Uber for children, raised $5.5 million.

Here’s some of the most recent talent tech news:

Upwork

Online staffing provider Upwork formally launched a new Talent Services division last week. The move aims to add a “people layer” for large firms using its Upwork Enterprise product — talent specialists will help users home in on the top workers for their projects.

“Much of the purpose of Talent Services is to be the hand to hold,” said Margaret Lilani, VP of Talent Services and a staffing industry veteran with 12 years of experience.

Upwork’s technology can find the top 1% of talent for a project, but the human teams in talent services will winnow that down further for the right workers. Talent Services can also vet workers with behavioral interviews, skills assessments and more.

Talent Services can provide full program management capabilities or simply supply workers. It can also build talent pools of human cloud workers as well as create a “talent store” of pre-vetted workers that companies have ready for specific, repeatable needs. For example, a company that needs translations done periodically can have a store of pre-vetted workers — those who have already signed nondisclosure agreements, undergone background screening and have completed other preparations — ready to take on the translation tasks as they are needed.

It has the capability to handle both W-2 and independent contractor workers.

Lilani ran a division for Kelly Services Inc. (NASD: KELYA) and later built a legal staffing business as part of a technology company that did $3 million in revenue in its first year. Lilani joined Upwork last December to get the Talent Services operations running.

Upwork is the second-largest B2B human cloud platform.

“Traditional approaches to talent sourcing are no longer sufficient to keep up with today’s on-demand economy — it’s never been harder to find great talent,” said Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel of the new Talent Services offering. “We’re the first solution to bridge this talent gap by combining online sourcing capabilities with a robust technology platform. This unique combination offers a scalable model that enables businesses to quickly access the quality talent they need, while driving down project costs.”

Gigster

Human cloud online staffing firm Gigster raised $20 million in a funding round; investors include NBA champion and Charlotte Hornets majority owner Michael Jordan, Advertising Age reported. Gigster connects freelance web engineers and developers with client companies.

So far, San Francisco-based Gigster has raised $32.5 million, according to the publication.

Candidate.Guru and Elevated Careers by eHarmony

Candidate.Guru acquired Elevated Careers, a company founded by dating site eHarmony to match job candidates with companies based on skills, culture and personality.

“With this acquisition, we are gaining cutting-edge employee/job candidate survey and matching technology, the perfect complement to the artificial intelligence technology Candidate.Guru has already developed to predict a culture fit between job candidates and companies,” said Chris Daniels, founder and CEO of Candidate.Guru.

Joining Candidate.Guru in the wake of the deal is Dan Erickson, general manager and VP of Elevated Careers.

Zūm

Zūm, a firm that matches families with drivers to transport children, finished a series A funding round for $5.5 million with Sequoia Capital. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company is similar to an Uber but for children.

Zūm operates in the San Francisco Bay Area and Orange County, Calif. It plans to use the funding for product and market expansion.

Vervoe

A startup called Vervoe that aims to replace traditional interviews with on-the-job-tasks designed by experts, announced a funding round of $1 million.

The New York-based company aims to bring speed and fairness to the hiring process. After a candidate completes task-based simulations, the product can evaluate and rank candidates.

Vervoe was co-founded by Omer Molad and David Weinberg.

Postmates

B2C human cloud platform Postmates has laid off its city managers and centralizing some of its operations at its San Francisco headquarters, TechCrunch reported. The total number of people affected is 15.
