IT jobs roughly flat in September amid ‘weird’ market

October 12, 2023

IT employment was relatively flat in September, according to the TechServe Alliance’s analysis of US jobs data. The number of IT jobs fell by 3,300 from August to a total of approximately 5.3 million.

Year over year, IT employment was down by 107,600 jobs.

“It is a weird market,” TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release. “Many companies remain cautious given the ongoing uncertainty around the trajectory of the broader economy. This has caused some employers to pause or extend the timeline of their hiring decisions.”

Roberts also noted talent supplies still remain tight in high-demand skill sets.

“In Q3, IT employment stood at only 1.94% — well below full employment,” he said. “No single narrative fully describes a very mixed (shall we say weird) IT employment landscape.”

The TechServe Alliance represents both IT and engineering staffing firms, and it tracks engineering employment as well. It found the number of engineering jobs rose by 6,4000 in September compared to August to a total of more than 2.8 million. Year over year, the number of engineering jobs was up by 66,900.
