IT departments expect boost in staffing next year, Spiceworks report finds

October 12, 2017

IT budgets are expected to stabilize —and in many cases, grow —  around the globe in 2018, leading to a boost in IT staffing, according to the 2018 State of IT report released by Spiceworks, a network that includes millions of IT professionals.

More IT departments worldwide will swell in size than shrink, the report found. Larger companies forecast the biggest boost in staffing, with more than 60% of companies with 500-plus employees expecting to increase IT staff while 70% of large enterprises, 5,000-plus, report plans to hire more IT professionals in 2018.

According to the report’s survey, total expected change in IT staff for 2018:

  • Increase: 45%
  • No change: 48%
  • Decrease: 5%
  • Don’t know: 2%

Most companies across the globe will be keeping IT budgets steady, or giving them a boost over the next 12 months. Almost half of companies, 44%, expect budgets to increase while 43% anticipate no change; only 11% expect to see their budgets decrease.

The survey was conducted by Spiceworks in July 2017 and included 1,003 respondents from North America and Europe. Respondents are among IT professionals in Spiceworks.
