Half of human cloud, ride-sharing drivers say it’s their full-time job: report

June 14, 2018

About half of drivers for human cloud, ride-sharing firms such as Uber and Lyft drive full-time hours and half also consider the work their sole job, according to a report released last month by the University of California Los Angeles Labor Center. The report included a survey of 260 drivers for the human cloud firms, also known as transportation networking companies, in Los Angeles County.

“Driving for companies like Uber and Lyft is often not just a short-term gig,” said Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Project Director at the UCLA Labor Center. “For many drivers, it is their full-time, primary work, and they depend on it to support themselves, their families, and children. In fact, two out of three ride-hailing drivers in LA rely on driving as their main source of income.”

The report also found 44% of drivers reported difficulty paying for work expenses such as gas, insurance and car maintenance. And 80% wanted the power to negotiate their contract and get access to workers’ comp, health insurance and other benefits.
