Gig workers average $14.54 per hour, warehouse jobs in demand: Wonolo report

February 27, 2019

Delivery jobs are some of online staffing firm Wonolo’s highest-paid nationwide, while customer service, warehousing, and merchandising are some of the most highly rated categories, according to an analysis of its database of 300,000 gig workers released today.

Wonolo also found the average amount paid per hour across its platform for all genders was $14.54, according to its “The State of the Hustle: Inside America’s Thriving Blue-Collar Economy” report.

The 2018 data also found the winter holidays are the best time of the year to operate in the gig economy. The most prosperous month for gig workers is December when they earn an average of $114.46 for their full shifts. In comparison, during other months of the year, they average between $101.72 and $108.09. Overall, gig workers had a higher earning potential from July to December at about $106.78 per shift.

The fastest growing, in-demand gigs were in the warehouse.

The report also forecasts a few trends to expect in 2019. Wonolo expects more women to seek jobs in traditionally male-dominated industries in 2019 and anticipates a rise of women completing gigs in industries like shipping and logistics, manufacturing and warehousing. Additionally, finding workers for the holidays will start even earlier in 2019 than in 2018, and businesses will probably need to pay more to compete for talent.
