Germany - Unemployment falls to 6.5%

Employment and unemployment in Germany continued their favourable trends in March 2011, according to the latest data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.48 million, which was over half a million more than a year earlier. 2.73 million people were unemployed. This means that the unemployment rate was down to 6.5% in March 2011.
 
According to provisional results of employment accounts, the number of persons in employment in March 2011 rose by +561,000 or +1.4% compared with March 2010. Compared with February 2011, the number of persons in employment was up by +153,000 or +0.4% in March 2011. The increase is due both to short-term economic and seasonal factors. When adjusted for seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment in March 2011 increased by +39,000 (+0.1%) on February 2011.
 
The unemployment rate of the 15 to 24 year olds in March 2011 (8.2%) was markedly higher than the adjusted rate of those aged 15 to 74 years (6.3%).
