General Motors Co. said Wednesday it will permanently lay off some 2,000 hourly workers in January at two car plants to cut bloated inventory, the same day it announced more than $900 million in investment at three plants for future products, The Detroit News reports. The layoff figure includes more than 300 temporary workers.
