DoorDash adds new pay option for independent contractor drivers

June 28, 2023

DoorDash, a food delivery work service platform, is changing the way it pays independent contractor delivery drivers, according to a post today. The drivers can now opt to be paid by the hour. The move comes as some jurisdictions announced minimum pay for independent contractor delivery workers. New York City announced a minimum pay rate earlier this month.

Under DoorDash’s “earn by time” plan, drivers will receive a guaranteed hourly minimum rate from the time they accept an offer to when it is completed. They will also receive 100% of their tips, which was already the case for drivers.

The company is also keeping its traditional “earn per offer” plan for drivers. They will be shown as an upfront guaranteed minimum amount they can expect to make on a delivery. They will continue to keep 100% of tips with this model as well.

“At the start of every dash where Earn by Time is available, Dashers can choose which earning mode they want to use, and at any time, they can end their dash and start a new one in a different mode when available,” the company said in a post. “With these two earning modes, Dashers today have unprecedented choice, flexibility and control in how they dash.”
