May 17, 2016

The majority of recent college grads, 87%, reported feeling well-prepared for their job, but only 50% of managers said the same, according to a new report by PayScale Inc. and Millennial Branding.

Writing proficiency is the hard skill most lacking among recent college grads, with 44% of managers citing it. Public speaking ranked second, with 39% of hiring managers saying recent college grads lacked it.

Among soft skills, 60% of managers said critical thinking/problem solving is the soft skill lacking the most among recent college graduates. It was followed closely by attention to detail and communication at 56% and 46%, respectively.

Overall skills data for this report was collected between March 2014 and March 2016 from more than 2 million US workers who completed the PayScale employee compensation survey. For the workplace preparedness and skills gap data, the report surveyed 63,924 managers and 14,167 recent college graduates in the US in early 2016 who completed the PayScale employee compensation survey.
