Contractor to pay $318,244 for worker misclassification at Hawaiian hotels

General contractor Steve Hoegger & Associates Inc. is paying $318,244 in a consent judgement for misclassifying workers in Hawaii as independent contractors and not paying overtime, the US Department of Labor announced this week.

The misclassification impacted 69 workers who participated in renovation work at the Marriott Ko’olina Hotel in Ohau and the Marriott Maui Ocean Club Hotel in Maui, according to the department. The workers included painters, carpenters, finishers, tile installers and other mechanic tradesman.

Hoegger, based in Wylie, Texas, agreed to pay $159,122 in back wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages for the total of $318,244.
