Checking candidates on social media — Staffing Quote of the week

April 24, 2018

“Since I know this person is actively seeking a position with our company, I’m interested in learning how they are maximizing their professional candidacy,” Loni Freeman, VP of human resources at public relations firm SSPR told Fast Company in a story on recruiters checking social media sites such Instagram and Facebook. However, Freeman said she looks at candidates’ LinkedIn profiles and stops there, and doesn’t look at other social media sites. “I do see value in understanding the public personality of an individual; however, once you learn information about someone, particularly protected hiring information, you can’t unlearn it. It’s a slippery slope for a recruiter, and using personal information to make a professional hiring decision is risky.”
