Canadian salaries to rise 2.2% next year

Canadian organizations expect salary increases to remain muted in 2017, according to a preview of The Conference Board of Canada’s Compensation Planning Outlook 2017 report released today.

Average increases for non-unionized employees is projected to be 2.2% next year. The report expects increases of 2.0% in the public sector and 2.3% in the private sector.

However, 11% Canadian organizations are planning a pay freeze across all employee groups.

The preview finds the highest average increases in the high technology industry at 2.8%. The food, beverage, and tobacco; and the finance, insurance, and real estate industries follow, at 2.7% each.

The lowest average increases are expected to be in the oil and gas sector at 1.1%.

Regionally, Manitoba has the highest projected increases at 2.7%, while the lowest average increase is expected in Alberta.
