Canadian jobs fall by 31,200 in July

Employment in Canada fell by 31,200 jobs in July from June, a 0.2% decrease, on a seasonally adjusted basis, Statistics Canada reported today.

Canada added 40,200 part-time jobs, but that was more than offset by a loss of 71,400 full-time jobs. And the unemployment rate rose to 6.9% in July from 6.8% in June.

Fewer people were employed in public administration in July while employment in healthcare and social assistance increased. The number of public sector jobs fell by 42,000 in July, but the private sector gained 13,600 jobs.

Employment in Ontario fell by 36,100 jobs and was the first notable decline since September 2015, according to Statistics Canada. The unemployment rate in Ontario was unchanged at 6.4% as fewer people participated in the labor market.

Looking to British Columbia, employment rose by 12,100 jobs. The unemployment rate in British Columbia fell to 5.6% in July from 5.9% in June.
