Canadian job vacancies down 10% year over year in Q2

Canadian employers reported 392,000 job vacancies in the second quarter, Statistics Canada reported today. The number of job vacancies fell by 45,000, down 10.3%, from the second quarter of 2015.

The job vacancy rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — declined 0.3 percentage points year over year to 2.5%.

The number of job vacancies fell in six of the 10 broad occupational groups compared with the second quarter of 2015. The largest decrease was in trades, transport and equipment operators, down 14,000, or 22.1%. Sales and service occupations had the second-largest decline in the number of job vacancies, down 12,000, or 7.2%.

The average offered hourly wage for all job vacancies was C$19.35 in the second quarter.
