Canada adds 94,100 jobs in November, unemployment rate lowest since 1976

December 07, 2018

Employment in Canada rose by 94,100 jobs in November, driven by gains in full-time work, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. Full-time jobs increased by about 89,900 and part-time employment rose by about 4,100.

The total number of jobs was 18.8 million in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 5.6% — the lowest since comparable data became available in 1976 — down from 5.8% in October.

Employment in November increased in professional, scientific and technical services; healthcare and social assistance; construction; business, building and other support services; transportation and warehousing; and agriculture. On the flip side, fewer people worked in information, culture and recreation.

Employment increased in six provinces, led by Quebec and Alberta, and was little changed in the four Atlantic provinces.

In Ontario, employment increased by 20,200 compared with October, the result of gains in full-time work. The unemployment rate remained at 5.6%.
