Canada adds 35,300 jobs in October

November 03, 2017

Canada added 35,300 jobs in October from September to a total of almost 18.5 million jobs as gains in full-time work offset a loss of part-time jobs, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 88,700 in October while part-time jobs fell by 53,400.

However, the unemployment rate edged up to 6.3% in October from 6.2% in September.

“The continued strength in job creation and recent acceleration in wages supports our view that the Canadian economy will continue to perform well over the second half of this year, after hitting a speed bump in July and August,” Craig Alexander, senior VP and chief economist at The Conference Board of Canada, said in a statement.

Employment rose in several industries, led by “other services”; construction; information, culture and recreation; and agriculture. Employment declined in wholesale and retail trade.

Provincially, the largest employment increase was in Quebec, followed by Alberta and Manitoba. However, employment decreased in Saskatchewan.

Employment in Ontario edged up by 5,200 jobs in October from September as a gain of 22,000 full-time jobs was partially offset by a loss of 16,700 part-time jobs. Ontario’s unemployment rate rose to 5.9% from to 5.6% in September.
