Canada adds 10,700 jobs in January, ADP report finds

February 16, 2018

Canada’s employment rose by 10,700 jobs in January from December, according to the ADP Canada national employment report.

“Hiring in Canada is off to a good start for 2018,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute. “Although we saw losses in education and finance, there were strong gains in construction and leisure and hospitality. Construction job growth is likely driven by the record number of housing units currently under construction. The leisure and hospitality industry is growing to meet the needs of consumers and international tourists.”

In the goods-producing sector, jobs increased in construction by 8,200; in natural resources and mining by 2,800; and in manufacturing by 1,500.

Leisure and hospitality and “other services” led gains in the service-providing sector, both with increases of 6,300 jobs; Trade/transportation and utilities gained 2,300 jobs and professional/business services jobs edged up by 600.

Education and healthcare posted the largest jobs loss in the service-providing sector — down by 7,400 — followed by finance/real estate, which lost 7,000 jobs in January.

The ADP Research Institute produces the report in close collaboration with Moody’s Analytics Inc. Derived from actual ADP payroll data, the report measures the change in total nonfarm payroll employment each month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
