B2B talent platforms grow 25%; report lists largest players

September 20, 2021

Gross service volume at B2B-focused “talent platforms” rose 25% year over year on a global basis in 2020, according to a report released Friday by Staffing Industry Analysts called “The Talent Platform Landscape.” This is after growth of 20% in 2019, which was updated from a previous report after reclassification of some talent platforms as staffing firms.

SIA defines gross service volume, or GSV, as funds paid to workers plus fees for facilitating the transaction.

The five largest B2B talent platforms by global gross spend volume are:

  1. Upwork Inc. (NASDAQ: UPWK) with gross spend volume of $2.52 billion
  2. MBO Partners with GSV of $950 million
  3. Fiverr International Ltd. (NYSE: FVRR) with GSV of $701 million
  4. Gerson Lehrman Group with GSV of $500 million
  5. Freelance.com with GSV of $371 million

The report defines talent platforms as a growing segment of the digital marketplace that facilitate direct, digitally enabled contingent work arrangements from sourcing through payments. B2B-focused talent platforms are one type of talent platform. The other type is “work services platforms,” which includes firms such as Uber, Lyft and DoorDash.

A full definition of talent platforms is in the report along with more information on market size, recent M&A activity, growth drivers, the legal environment and more.

Further discussion of talent platforms will also take place at the Collaboration in the Gig Economy conference taking place later this week in Phoenix.
