Average holiday bonus increasing to $1,797 this year but fewer offered, Accounting Principals survey finds

October 27, 2017

While bonuses are rising in value by 66% this year, they overall are becoming more scarce, according to a survey released by Jacksonville Fla.-based Accounting Principals.

The average holiday bonus this year is expected to be $1,797, up from $1,081 in 2016 and $858 in 2015. However, 63% of HR and hiring managers reported their company plans to give employees monetary holiday bonuses this year, down from 75% in last year’s survey.

Of those companies not planning to give monetary bonuses this year, 39% indicated they plan to give their employees other perks. For the first time, the second-most popular reason listed was that companies are giving charitable donations in lieu of a bonus, with 38% of respondents noting their company plans to give donations on behalf of employees, a big jump from 7% in 2016.

HR and hiring managers also noted that employees could take action to increase their likelihood of getting a holiday bonus this year. Respondents suggested:

  • Staying more motivated throughout the year: 56%, up from 54% in 2016
  • Being more positive and upbeat: 49%, up from 45%
  • Volunteering to take on additional job duties: 42%, up from 34%
  • Reminding the company of their accomplishments: 42%, up from 23%
  • Asking their boss for a bonus directly: 33%, up from 15%

The survey was conducted between Aug. 25 and Sept. 6, 2017, among 500 US HR or hiring managers.
