Attorney known for IC misclassification lawsuits now running for Massachusetts attorney general

January 25, 2022

Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney who took on firms such as Uber Technologies Inc., Postmates and others over their classification of workers as independent contractors, announced today that she is running for attorney general of Massachusetts.

One recent example of her work is a $100 million settlement in a DoorDash Inc. independent contractor case that was announced in December, Bloomberg reported. Liss-Riordan’s office was one of those representing workers.

“When I started working as a labor lawyer, I got used to being the only woman in the courtroom, facing more experienced, better-funded attorneys working on behalf of powerful corporations,” Liss-Riordan said in a statement. “I beat the odds and won big victories against companies like FedEx, Starbucks, and Uber for working people because I was the most passionate, dedicated person in the room.”

Liss-Riordan previously ran for US Senate in 2020, but lost to Edward Markey, The Associated Press reported.

If elected, Liss-Riordan would replace Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey, who is running for governor.

Massachusetts voters may also get to decide on whether drivers and deliverers for companies such as Lyft Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. should remain independent contractors in a potential upcoming ballot initiative.
