Age discrimination a career challenge for 34%, survey finds

November 15, 2016

Age discrimination in hiring practices remains an issue in some countries despite an increased awareness globally and with many markets moving toward better protections, according to a global study conducted by ManpowerGroup Solutions, part of ManpowerGroup (NYSE: MAN). The survey found a significant number of global candidates, 34%, perceive their age — at both ends of the spectrum — as their top career challenge, ranking second behind only lack of access to quality jobs.

Mexico had the most survey respondents reporting ageism as a perceived career challenge, while the US reported the least:

  • Global average: 34%
  • Mexico: 51%
  • Australia: 37%
  • United Kingdom: 34%
  • China: 30%
  • United States: 26%

The research shows that ageism is on top of employees’ minds,” said Anne Gerritsen, research and public relations manager, ManpowerGroup Solutions, Australia. “While other aspects of hiring discrimination have received more attention, ageism, on the other hand, seems like a topic that is not talked about enough. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done.”

The report, “Clocking back in: Boomerang Workers,” also found boomerang workers have much to offer companies who are facing talent shortages. The report highlights seven strategies for building an age-diverse talent pool:

  1. Highlight your open door to employees before they retire
  2. Don’t throw away traditional interview formats
  3. Leverage internal referrals
  4. Align reward structures
  5. Emphasize flexibility
  6. Look out for team players, no matter the generation
  7. Outsource the search for your retiree workforce

“Whether motivated financially or intellectually, more retirees are returning to work than ever before,” said Kate Donovan, Senior VP of ManpowerGroup Solutions and global RPO president. “Our latest Talent Shortage Survey shows 40% of employers globally are having difficulties filling roles; employers should see this largely untapped talent pool of ‘boomerang workers’ as a valuable source for filling talent gaps.”

ManpowerGroup Solutions in October 2015 surveyed 4,500 job seekers across five markets: US, UK, Australia, China and Mexico.
