Adecco calls for ‘new social contract’

June 04, 2018

The Adecco Group, the world’s largest staffing firm, calls for a “new social contract” for work in the 21st century in a white paper released today. While companies and individuals are embracing the potential of more flexible and diverse ways of working, labor and social policies have not yet picked up the pace of change, according to the report.

“The rise of technology and, in particular, the platform economy — where digital applications connect workers with employers — has further enabled new ways of working and new opportunities,” the report stated. “However, it has also highlighted significant gaps in the social contract for work, injecting fresh momentum into calls for a new social framework for all types of work.”

The report is intended to raise awareness about the changing policy needs of today’s labor market, accelerated by the impact of technology and its effects, such as the rise of the gig economy, and to drive forward a debate including governments, companies and social partners.

“We need a new social contract for work that is fit for purpose in today’s world,” said Adecco Group CEO Alain Dehaze. “Governments, employers and social partners should redesign regulation to ensure that all work opportunities are secure and sustainable for workers and business alike.”

Adecco also launched a microsite dedication to the debate.
