AMN revenue up 47% in Q1 with travel nurse revenue up 74%

AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AMN) reported first-quarter revenue rose 47.1%; growth as measured on an organic basis increased 44% year over year. Growth was driven by the company’s nurse and allied staffing segment, its language services and vendor management system business. Travel nurse revenue was up 74%.

First quarter revenue was the highest in company history, AMN reported. The total included $25 million from vaccination-related projects.

While nurse and allied health revenue was up 54.7%, AMN noted travel nurse revenue rose 74% year over year while allied revenue rose 17%.

In the company’s physician and leadership solutions, revenue rose 2.1%. AMN reported locum tenens revenue rose 9% year over year driven by stronger revenue per day. However, interim leadership revenue fell 3%. The company’s physician and leadership search business saw revenue fall 16% year over year.

AMN reported technology and workforce solutions revenue rose 119.8% year over year with organic growth of 84%. The increase was driven by the company’s acquisition of Stratus Video in February 2020. Stratus is now known as AMN Language Services. Meanwhile, AMN’s vendor management system business saw revenue rise by 91% year over year.

Synzi acquisition

AMN reported that it acquired Synzi Holdings Inc. in early April. Synzi is a virtual care communication platform; AMN says it’s expanding its solutions for the home health and outpatient care markets with the deal.

Guidance

AMN forecast second-quarter revenue of between $810 million and $830 million, a year-over-year increase of between 33% and 36%.

Among the forecasts:

  • Travel nurse revenue, up by between 30% and 33% year over year.
  • Allied revenue, up by between 38% to 40% year over year
  • Physician and leadership solutions revenue, up by 20%.
  • Technology and workforce solutions, up by between 60% and 65%.

Revenue guidance includes approximately $30 million from vaccination-related projects.

Share price and market cap

Shares in AMN were up 5.94% to $93.93 as of 12:12 p.m. Eastern time; they set a new 52-week high today when they reached $94.82, according to FT.com. The company had a market cap of $4.18 billion.
