47% of employers plan to recruit contractors/temps

March 05, 2019

US hiring managers’ and human resource professionals’ hiring plans for 2019 are on par with last year’s, according to CareerBuilder’s 2019 US job forecast, released today.

Forty percent of employers plan to hire full-time, permanent employees in 2019, down from 44% who said the same in a separate survey for 2018. And 47% plan to recruit part-time, contract or temporary workers, down from 51% in last year’s survey.

There is demand for full-time workers, as 50% of human resource managers say they currently have open positions for which they cannot find qualified candidates. However, candidates are ready to take on those roles, according to the report; across all skills levels, 32% of workers are looking to change jobs in 2019. When asked why they left their last job, 15% of employees cited low compensation or a lack of benefits while 10% cited poor company culture as the reason for leaving.

In-demand areas for hiring include:

  • Skilled labor: 25%
  • Data analysis: 21%
  • Digital marketing: 12%
  • Cyber security: 11%
  • J AI and machine learning: 10%
  • Healthy living: 10%

The survey of 1,021 hiring managers and human resource professionals was conducted online within the US by Harris Interactive on behalf of CareerBuilder between Dec. 20, 2018, and Jan. 16, 2019.
