Market Description

Although it is the world’s largest democracy, India has a relatively small but fast-growing staffing industry. There is considerable segmentation in forms of employment; by sector, location, region, gender, caste, religion, tribe, etc. Indian employment is characterized by low-waged and unregulated informal labor (over 90% of the workforce), which means that staffing firms focus on higher-skilled and higher-wage professional sectors. India is also unusual in that it emerged from an agricultural economy to become a service economy, mainly bypassing the industrial development stage, which features in most countries’ economic evolution. Given the size of the population, the country has an abundance of skilled workers, making it an attractive outsourcing destination. However, like other countries, companies still struggle to source and retain talent. Temporary staffing is often referred to locally as ‘flexi-staff’. The staffing market has high long-term growth potential, given the prospects of the Indian economy.
