Market Description

The Australian staffing market is similar to other English-speaking markets and dates back to the 1950s. Other large international staffing firms from Europe and North America began to enter the market, mainly during the 1980s and 1990s; today, many familiar staffing brands operate there. Temporary staffing in Australia is more commonly called ‘labor hire’. The country’s abundant and diverse natural energy and mineral resources make the mining industry a very important business sector; not surprisingly, the engineering staffing segment is more prominent here than in other major staffing markets. Given the multiplicity of state, occupational and industry-negotiated pay awards (often referred to as ‘modern awards’ due to the modernization of the process in 2010), calculating pay is a particularly complex area for employers and staffing firms.
