A former travel nurse pleaded guilty on Nov. 8 in federal court in Boston to tampering with morphine at a rehabilitation facility, the US Justice Department reported.
The travel nurse, Loralie LaBroad, 54, of Hampton, New Hampshire, faces up to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release as well as a fine of up to $250,000, according to the department. LaBroad had pleaded guilty to one count of tampering with a consumer product. She is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 21, 2025.
“Ms. LaBroad is a lifelong medical care provider,” her attorney C. Henry Fasoldt wrote in a statement to SIA. “She changed her plea in order to take responsibility for her actions. She looks forward to receiving her sentence then getting on with her life.”
LaBroad was a travel nurse assigned to a rehabilitation center when she used a syringe to remove morphine from two bottles and injected another liquid into the bottles to replace the morphine, according to the department. The bottles were then returned to a medication cart.
Investigators seized the bottles immediately after LaBroad’s shift and laboratory testing confirmed the bottles each contained less than the declared concentration of morphine, the department said.
