More than a third of job seekers, 38%, are likely to turn down a job offer if too much AI is used, according to a survey by Capterra of 3,000 job seekers from 12 countries. The finding comes as more AI is used in the hiring process from scanning résumés to initial candidate screenings.

Capterra’s survey found that 65% of job seekers expressed a positive view of AI in recruiting, but they draw the line when it’s used too much. In addition, 60% of candidates said they are more likely to apply for jobs where they can interact with a human at any stage of the process.

“While the benefits of AI are too big to ignore at this point, companies still need to think about how they implement AI in their recruiting workflow,” Brian Westfall, principal HR analyst at Capterra, said in a press release. “If they do too much too fast, they risk alienating top talent and causing permanent harm to their employer brand.”

The survey also found that job seekers who are most familiar with AI were more likely to walk away from AI-heavy recruiting processes. In addition, familiarity with AI and college education led to lower tolerance when AI is poorly implemented or overly relied upon, according to Capterra.

Job seekers ages 43 and under were more also likely to embrace AI in recruitment compared to older counterparts, 70% versus 53%.

Still, the survey found that 62% of job seekers believe they have a better chance of being hired if AI is used in the hiring process, and 70% believe that AI is generally less biased than humans when evaluating candidates.
