Temporary jobs in Greece dip 0.3% in Q2

The number of temporary jobs in Greece in the second quarter of 2024 decreased by 0.3% when compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to research from the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

When compared to the previous quarter, the number of temporary jobs in Greece increased by 40.2% in Q1 2024 given strong seasonality trends into the summer months. Across Greece, the number of temporary jobs stood at 329,400 in Q2 2024. This compared to 234,900 million in Q1 2024.

The overall share of persons with temporary jobs is 11.0%, compared to 89.0% for permanent workers.

In the second quarter 2024, the majority of the employed are working as employees (69.3%), whereas a significant share is working as self-employed without employees (19.5%).

Meanwhile, part-time employment amounts to 6.5%, recording a decrease by 13.7% in comparison with the previous quarter and a decrease by 9.2% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2024 was 9.8%. The unemployment rate was 12.1% in the previous quarter (2024 Q1) and 11.2% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year (2023 Q2).

The number of unemployed persons amounted to 467,619, recording a decrease by 18.6% compared to the previous quarter and a decrease by 12.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

At the same time, the number of persons employed amounted to 4,327,825, recording an increase by 3.7% compared to the previous quarter and an increase by 2.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the number of persons outside the labour force, i.e., the persons who are neither working nor looking for a job, amounted to 4,225,028. Persons outside the labour force under the age of 75, amounted to 2,994,624. Their share decreased by 1.8% compared with the previous quarter and by 1.5% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Most unemployed persons report that the main reason for stopping their last job was that it was a job of limited duration (32.0%) or they were dismissed (16.6%).
