GovernmentJobs.com, a job board for government jobs, said that while federal layoffs may be looming, state and local governments continue to hire. It reported 589,000 employees were hired by state and local governments through its system in the past year.

“Public service is a calling, and many federal workers will be looking for ways to continue contributing to their communities despite uncertainty about their current roles,” Shane Evangelist, CEO of Neogov, the parent company of GovernmentJobs.com, said in a press release. “As policy changes take effect in the coming months, state and local governments are actively seeking talented, dedicated individuals to fill important positions.”

It noted California, Florida, North Carolina, Washington state and the District of Columbia-Maryland-Virginia region are going to feel the effects of reductions in the federal workforce because they have some of the highest numbers of federal employees. However, local governments in those areas are hiring at consistent rates, GovernmentJobs.com reported.

California had 147,487 federal workers as of December 2024.  However, GovernmentJobs.com data says 268,576 California workers were hired by the state and local governments in the past two years.

The company noted Florida has 94,014 federal employees as of December 2024, but state and local governments hired 49,425 over the past two years.

For North Carolina, the federal government employed 51,015 workers, while state and local governments hired 66,310 over the past two years.
