Singapore authorities have arrested 32 individuals for their suspected involvement in illegal employment.
Officers from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) conducted an island-wide enforcement operation at 27 locations.
Among those arrested, a 33-year-old male is suspected of being part of a syndicate that operated 28 shell public entertainment outlets. These outlets allegedly hired work permit holders as performing artists despite being non-operational.
Sixteen men and 15 women were also arrested for their alleged involvement in making false declarations in work pass applications when the companies did not require their employment.
Investigations against all arrested individuals are ongoing.
The Work Permit (Performing Artiste) scheme is intended for licensed public entertainment outlets to hire performing artists on a short-term basis. In light of the growing trend of abuse, the Ministry said it will be reviewing the scheme.
