Seek New Zealand job ads tumble 31% in July

Job ads across Seek New Zealand fell by 31% in July 2024 when compared to the same period a year ago.
When compared to the prior month, job ads fell slightly by 1% in July 2024.
Meanwhile, applications per job ad rose by 3% in June 2024 when compared to June 2023.
Rob Clark, Seek NZ country manager, said in a press release, “Job ad listings are fluctuating. After three months of steep decline and last month’s 4% rise in ad volumes, job ads declined 1% in August.”
“There was a notable drop in some of the larger industries, such as accounting, after a rise the month prior, and trades & services. Even so, we are starting to see increasing demand in some pockets of the market, such as hospitality and tourism, healthcare & medical and education & training.
On a year-on-year basis, job ads in Wellington fell by 41%, the steepest decline. On the other hand, Otago saw a fall of 18%, the smallest decline.
On a month-on-month basis, Marlborough saw an increase of 5%, the biggest improvement. Meanwhile, Hawkes Bay saw a decline of 7%, the steepest among regions.
When it comes to industry trends, the biggest month-on-month increase was seen in mining, resources and energy (24%). Call centre & customer service reported a fall of 11%, the biggest decline.
