Seek job ads in Australia tumble 17.1% in June

Job ads on job board Seek Australia fell by 17.1% in June 2024 when compared with June 2023. Job ads were also down over the prior month.

Further data from Seek showed that applications per job ad in May were up 3.0% when compared with April 2024.

By industry and on a year-over-year basis, the information and communication technology industry saw the steepest fall in June at -30.0% among the top 10 industries. This was followed by hospitality and tourism at -28.4%. The smallest declines were observed across trades and services (-14.1%) and community services and development (-14.1%).

On a month-over-month basis, hospitality and tourism recorded the biggest decline at -8.1% while trades and services saw only a slight fall (-0.1%).

By state, the largest year-over-year decline was seen in Victoria (-24.2%), while Queensland recorded the smallest decline at -7.5%.

On a monthly basis, the Australian Capital Territory saw the biggest decline at -5.1% while New South Wales reported only a slight drop at -0.4%.

Seek also noted that its June report will be the final Employment Dashboard published. From 1 August, Seek will be publishing two regular reports each month, the Seek Employment Report (which contains more detailed content from the Employment Dashboard) and the Seek Advertised Salary Index.
