Portugal’s temporary work placements fall in July

The number of temporary work placements in Portugal fell by 3,816 people in July 2024 when compared to July 2023, according to the latest barometer by the Portuguese Association of Companies in the Private Sector of Employment and Human Resources and ISCTE (University Institute of Lisbon).

July’s Barometer showed that the number of temporary placements in July 2024 totalled 30,586, and the index stood at 0.89. July’s Index value remains below the baseline value of 1.0, although the Index pointed out that the average value over the last 12 months was 0.89.

In terms of turnover, which is measured through an index that uses the total gross salaries paid for all temporary placements, the index was 0.90. This corresponded to one of the lowest values in the last three years. The Barometer noted a significant part of 2023 saw a drop in the number of contracts, combined with steadiness or a slight increase in turnover.

When it comes to gender, the Barometer noted a slight increase in the weight of contracts involving female workers when compared to the previous month. This percentage stood at 43.1% (which compares with 42.8% in the previous month).

By age group, 24.0% of contracts were signed by workers aged 16 to 24. Workers aged 25 to 29 signed 20.9% of all contracts. The remaining age groups were as follows: 30 to 34 (17.4%), 35 to 39 (12.5%), 40 to 49 (17.4%), 50 and above (7.8%).

By business sector, companies that engaged temporary workers operate mainly in the ‘manufacture of components and accessories for motor vehicles’ sector, representing 9.2% of the total contracts signed in July 2024.

Among top professions, the distribution of temporary work was led by “other elementary professions” (30.0%) in July 2024.
