Three-quarters of Americans still believe artificial intelligence will reduce the number of jobs over the next 10 years, according to poll results released by Bentley University. The percent is unchanged from a similar survey last year.

Among people skeptical of AI, 88% believe that it will lower the number of jobs in the US over the next 10 years. Even 59% of AI promoters — those who see more good than harm from AI — believe it will result in fewer jobs.

In addition, 77% of those surveyed do not trust business much or at all to use AI responsibly.

Poll results were released by Bentley University in its Bentley-Gallup Business in Society Report.

Overall, it found that US adults see more harm than good from the use of AI. While 56% of Americans believe the impact of AI will be neutral — doing equal amounts of harm and good — nearly a third, 31%, believe AI will do more harm than good. Only 13% believe the good of AI outweighs its harms.

One note is that fewer this year believe that AI will do more harm than good. A similar survey last year found that 40% believe AI will do more harm.

One step that companies can take to reduce concerns about AI is to be transparent in how AI is being used. This was cited by 57% of respondents; however, no other strategy was chosen by more than 34% of respondents.

The web-based survey included 5,835 US adults and took place between April 29 and May 6.
