LinkedIn said today it’s working to comply with a decision by the Irish Data Protection Commission over its handling of personal data that resulted in €310 million (US$334.3 million) in fines.

“Our compliance efforts are underway in response to the Irish Data Protection Commission decision on claims from 2018 about some of our digital advertising efforts in the EU,” LinkedIn said in a statement. “In the coming weeks, we’ll update our European Regional Privacy Notice and ask for consent to continue using certain data for personalized ads.”

LinkedIn ranks as the largest online job advertising provider, according to SIA research.

Under its compliance efforts, LinkedIn plans to ask for consent (or opt-in) to the use of certain data in the countries affected. LinkedIn plans to ask members in those countries for consent the weeks prior to Jan. 22, 2025.

Among the changes for uses in designated countries, LinkedIn will seek consent to use the following data:

  • Data it infers about user age range, gender, interests and traits, and inferred location (from an observed IP address).
  • Data the company observes or infers about user activity on LinkedIn services.

In addition, LinkedIn will seek consent in designated countries to use certain data from others (advertisers, ad exchanges and publishers) for personalized ads purposes, including:

  • Showing ads outside LinkedIn.
  • Targeting based on advertiser data.
  • Measuring ad effectiveness.

LinkedIn also will update its European Regional Privacy Notice to ensure that:

  • The purposes for use of user data are based on consent and legitimate interests are clear.
  • Users have access to further information on targeted advertising practices.
