IT employment in the US remained essentially flat in June, adding just 200 jobs — an increase of just .004% from May — for total employment of more than 5.3 million, the TechServe Alliance reported July 10.

On a year-over-year basis, IT employment was down by 19,100 jobs in June, according to an analysis of US jobs number by the trade association representing the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.

“While IT employment began 2024 posting small gains, the last few months have been effectively flat with month-to-month shifts within a very narrow range,” TechServe CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release. “With continued macroeconomic uncertainty and general unease around the future, employers continue to exercise caution in their hiring practices.”

Roberts noted that despite softer demand compared to the hiring frenzy that followed in the wake of Covid-19, many IT skill sets are still in short supply, as reflected by second-quarter IT unemployment of only 2.5%.

“While demand will always ebb and flow based on the perception of macroeconomic and business trajectory, the limited supply of talent in high-demand skill sets such as those powering the AI revolution will remain an ongoing challenge,” Roberts said.

The TechServe Alliance also reported that engineering employment rose by 3,900 jobs in June for total employment of more than 2.8 million. Engineering employment is up by 40,400 jobs year over year.
