IT employment in the US remained essentially flat in September, edging down by 1,700 jobs — a decrease of just 0.03% from August — with total IT employment at more than 5.3 million, the TechServe Alliance reported on Oct. 9.

The number of IT jobs was also down year over year by 15,100, a 0.28% decline.

“While the broader economy showed resilience in September with stronger-than-expected job growth, IT employment remains largely stuck in place,” TechServe CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release.

Roberts noted that after a general downward trajectory during the latter half of 2022 and throughout 2023, IT employment has been essentially flat in 2024.

“Month-to-month movement up or down has been barely perceptible,” he said.

On the other hand, the TechServe Alliance reported that engineering employment rose by 1,600 jobs in September, a 0.06% increase, for total employment of more than 2.8 million. Year over year, engineering jobs grew 0.92%, adding 25,800 workers.

“With the cloud of uncertainty beginning to lift on the economy and with the election soon to be in the rearview mirror, we are optimistic that 2025 will bring an environment more conducive to growth and investment in IT,” Roberts said.
