IT employment in the US remained essentially flat in December 2024, edging down by 1,600 jobs — a decrease of 0.03% from November — with total IT employment at more than 5.2 million, the TechServe Alliance reported on Jan. 15. Despite the muted performance, the organization cited “green shoots” of optimism for 2025.
“While IT employment remained anemic throughout 2024, there are ‘green shoots’ warranting increased optimism for 2025,” TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release.
Roberts noted that despite the softer numbers in IT, the sector’s fourth-quarter unemployment rate of 2.7% highlights the underlying demand for skilled technology professionals.
“Further, with the election over and much of the near-term economic uncertainty dissipated, we are hearing from industry firms that many IT projects that were sidelined are expected to come back online,” Roberts said. “The critical need to incorporate AI and protect against cyber threats will continue to accelerate demand for professionals in those skill sets for the foreseeable future.”
On a year-over-year basis, IT employment fell by 15,500 jobs, marking a 0.29% decline.
Meanwhile, the TechServe Alliance reported that engineering employment rose by 0.35% year over year, adding 9,900 workers. However, it fell by 1,000 in December from November, for total employment of more than 2.8 million.
