IT employment edges down slightly in August

IT employment in the US declined slightly in August — shedding 2,400 jobs from July — with total IT employment at more than 5.3 million, the TechServe Alliance reported Sept. 11.
The decrease in IT jobs was 0.05%.
“As the overall job market softened in August, IT employment continued to struggle to gain momentum,” TechServe CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release.
Roberts noted that IT job growth has remained effectively flat throughout 2024 after 23 consecutive months of job losses.
“I continue to see IT employment moving sideways until the fog of uncertainty lifts over the economy, the national election and ongoing geopolitical turbulence,” he said. “Long term, the demand for IT professionals will continue to outstrip supply, and IT staffing companies prepared to respond to demand as the market recovers will be most likely to succeed and build enterprise value.”
The number of IT jobs was also down year over year by 17,500, a decrease of 0.33%.
On the other hand, the TechServe Alliance reported that engineering employment grew 1.06% year over year, adding 29,800 engineering jobs, but fell by 1,600 in August from July, for total employment of more than 2.8 million.
