Indiana county posts largest increase in average weekly wage in Q2

Of the 369 largest US counties, Hamilton County in Indiana posted the largest year-over-year gain in average weekly wages in the second quarter. Located within the Indianapolis metropolitan area, Hamilton County saw its average weekly wages rise by 33.4% year over year to $1,654, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Nov. 20.
The “professional and business services” segment, which includes staffing along with several other industries, had the largest impact on the wage increase in Hamilton County. The county’s average weekly wage in this segment rose 139.6% to $2,161.
King County in Washington state posted the second-largest largest year-over-year increase in average weekly wages among large counties in the second quarter. Its average weekly wage rose 10.4% year over year to $2,507.
The county with the largest year-over-year decrease in average weekly wages was Massachusetts’ Essex County in the greater Boston area. Its average weekly wage fell 2.1% to $1,416. The BLS noted that professional and business services again played a role, though in this case the sector saw its average weekly wage fall by 25.7% to $644 in Essex County.
The BLS’ report noted it is suspending publication of data from Colorado because a project to modernize that state’s unemployment insurance system has resulted in data quality issues.
