The full impact of Hurricane Helene is still being assessed, but more information is becoming available on its impact on businesses, including staffing.
Hurricane Helene has left widespread devastation across the South and ranks among the worst of storms, The Associated Press reported. The hurricane’s death toll was at 133 in reporting on Sept. 30, and parts of Western North Carolina were without power or cellular service.
Businesses were also impacted. In one example, Axios reported the health supply chain is facing stress, with a report saying the hurricane damaged a North Carolina plant that makes IV fluids for many US hospitals. Staffing firms were also affected.
“Employbridge has seen a severe impact to our branches and customers in South Georgia and Greenville, South Carolina,” Joanie Bily, division president and chief workforce analyst at Employbridge, said in a statement to SIA. “Some companies are shutting down operations for the week but are trying to get back up and running as soon as possible. We stand ready to support our colleagues, talent, clients and the communities who have been affected by the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene in the days, weeks and months to come.”
North Carolina Health News reported that western North Carolina hospitals are in “managed chaos” but remain operational.
SIA reached out to several healthcare staffing firms for comment. Atlanta-based Jackson Healthcare said in a note to SIA that its offices are fine.
Other businesses were also impacted. Business Insider reported that a mine in North Carolina that provides material for semiconductor manufacturing has been shut down. And East Tennessee State University has suspended classes, in another example.
